We’re not certain how many cities in Arkansas have their own flag, but we’d be willing to bet none have a flag that’s been into outer space.

That’s right, thanks to the efforts of Fayetteville-born astronaut Richard Covey, the Fayetteville flag was flown aboard the United States Space Shuttle Discovery from Aug. 27 through Sept. 3, 1985.

Launching from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, Discovery completed 112 orbits, traveling two and three-quarter million miles before landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

While you might not be able to simulate the Fayetteville flag awesomeness that Mr. Covey successfully completed, you can certainly pop a wheelie or two, or hang from some monkey bars while wearing a Fayetteville body flag.

Close enough, right?
