“The Land of Opportunity” was adopted as Arkansas’s nickname in 1953, alluding to a “bright outlook for the development of business, industry, and agriculture,” according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas.

During the mid-1980s, the state’s parks system began promoting Arkansas as “the Natural State,” a name which proved more popular, and was eventually adopted in 1995.
